REVIEW - Mr Kipling Frosty Fancies

Christmas must be Mr Kipling's favourite time of year. Not only do his sales of mince pies sky-rocket but he also gets to roll out the festive classics, such as his Festive Bakewell Tarts, Gingerbread Whirls and the good old Frosty Fancies.

I do like French Fancies and won't turn them down if they're in front of me, but they're not really something I would go and deliberately buy for myself. My mum brought these with her as a gift when she came for a recent visit, hence why they ended up in my food cupboard. Now that I think of it, my last packet of French Fancies (the Halloween witches' hat editions) were also a present from my mum - maybe she likes giving them as gifts, who knows!
"Exceedingly merry"
Unlike the Halloween French Fancies and the summer editions (which were cocktail themed if I remember correctly), there's nothing particularly different about these when compared to the classic French Fancies. The vanilla flavour and the colour of the sponge are the same, with the only difference being that these are covered in a white icing, rather than pink, yellow or brown. Even the packaging isn't noticeably Christmassy.

Despite a 2-hour train journey in a suitcase, all of the Fancies survived and were present in one piece - they're fairly robust little cakes! I couldn't detect any noticeable scent when I opened the packet but then again they are only vanilla flavoured so that's to be expected. The cakes themselves are fine and just what you expect if you've had French Fancies before - lovely soft sponge with a good underlying flavour of vanilla, a generous blob of buttercream on the top and a nice even layer of fondant icing. Visually they aren't particularly special and the drizzle of decorative white icing over the top is pretty much indiscernible from the white coating. I know they're supposed to be 'frosty' and the white icing definitely conveys that, but some colour would be nice!

Overall, these are nice enough but nothing particularly special. I'll give them a 7 out of 10 because they are pretty tasty and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them - they just don't stand out much in the supermarket when surrounded by all the other festive offerings!
